Unlike website directories that are maintained by human editors, search engines keep real-time information by running algorithms on a web crawler.<\/p>\n Understanding how search engines work<\/strong> is the first step and key to correctly and effectively optimizing your website<\/a> for search engines.<\/p>\n Search engines, especially Google, rely on three core functions:<\/p>\n These functions or stages are interrelated and dependent on one another.<\/p>\n The term Crawling literally means “crawling”, and it is the first stage in the operation of search engines. This is a process carried out by computer programs called (spiders, bots, or crawlers).<\/p>\n In this process, all websites’ pages are visited, including new and updated pages, to collect data about them and index them in the search engine’s database.<\/p>\n The crawling spiders rely on the links from pages already in the database to move to newly created web pages.<\/p>\n It\u2019s important to note that search engine spiders understand web pages through the code used, like HTML language.<\/p>\n The directory or indexing (Indexing)<\/strong> is the search engine\u2019s database that holds data about every web page indexed by the search engines. This data is gathered through the crawling process.<\/p>\n It serves as the source for displaying results in every search query.<\/p>\n Google’s search engine database contains an index of billions of web pages, videos, images, documents, and more.<\/p>\n Not all web pages are actually saved in the search engine\u2019s database, but certain parts of the content from each web page are stored.<\/p>\n For instance, each web page is linked to certain keywords and phrases that describe it, which are used in search results.<\/p>\n It\u2019s worth mentioning that the indexing process is tightly intertwined with the crawling process, which is why many refer to crawling and indexing as one unified process.<\/p>\n In this process, search engines display results to the user based on the search keywords (Keyword).
