Search Engines

Search Engines are computer programs designed to help find documents stored on the World Wide Web.

Search engines typically provide results in the form of a list known as “Search Engine Results Pages”, which may include a mix of web pages, images, and other types of files.

Search engines crawl data available in databases or website directories. Unlike website directories that are maintained by human editors, search engines keep real-time information by running algorithms on a web crawler.

Understanding how search engines work is the first step and key to correctly and effectively optimizing your website for search engines.

Search engines, especially Google, rely on three core functions:

These functions or stages are interrelated and dependent on one another.

The First Stage of Search Engines: Crawling

The term Crawling literally means “crawling”, and it is the first stage in the operation of search engines. Search Crawling

This is a process carried out by computer programs called (spiders, bots, or crawlers).

In this process, all websites’ pages are visited, including new and updated pages, to collect data about them and index them in the search engine’s database.

The crawling spiders rely on the links from pages already in the database to move to newly created web pages.

It’s important to note that search engine spiders understand web pages through the code used, like HTML language.

Stage Two: Indexing

The directory or indexing (Indexing) is the search engine’s database that holds data about every web page indexed by the search engines. This data is gathered through the crawling process.

It serves as the source for displaying results in every search query.

Google’s search engine database contains an index of billions of web pages, videos, images, documents, and more.

Not all web pages are actually saved in the search engine’s database, but certain parts of the content from each web page are stored.

For instance, each web page is linked to certain keywords and phrases that describe it, which are used in search results.

It’s worth mentioning that the indexing process is tightly intertwined with the crawling process, which is why many refer to crawling and indexing as one unified process.

Stage Three: Providing Search Results

In this process, search engines display results to the user based on the search keywords (Keyword). Search Indexing

Of course, the source of the search results is the database, which was collected in the previous stage.

It’s worth noting that search engines possess massive databases worldwide, managed by high-speed super machines, which is what enables search results on Google to appear in less than a second.

Search result ranking is based on algorithms that have been set up in advance, built on many factors and criteria known as Rank Factors.

As mentioned, the role of search engines is to guide users to the paths that answer their queries.

The search engine serves as the eye or guide that directs the user to the right path based on the search keyword they enter.

Search engines perform this function through three basic operations: crawling, indexing, and delivering results.

Some Famous Search Engines…

Google.

Yahoo.

Bing.

LiveSearch.

DuckDuckGo.

But the most important question here is… On what basis does Google rank these search results?

Since Google does not announce any of its algorithm factors, webmasters want to know these factors in order to rank higher.

Therefore, it became necessary to resort to alternative methods to better understand these factors.

One of the most important methods is studies and statistics that try to predict Google’s algorithm behavior by analyzing its past behavior, which we will discuss in detail in our next article.

To rank high in search engine results in 2020, despite the many updates, you’ll need to read more.
